Teaching Philosophy
Balance is key in teaching design. Working knowledge of the computer applications is expected for designers entering the workforce, however it is command of design elements and principles combined with the ability to solve problems creatively that sets successful students apart.
Guiding students towards understanding is one of the main roles of an educator. New design learners are aided by comprehending the differences and similarities between commercial design and the fine arts, as well as developing experience working with the conceptual, visual and technical tools of design.
A familiarity with both contemporary design practice and historical art and design movements are critical for a well-rounded design education. Both written and verbal communication skills are also key for students, no matter their future career goals.
Following and trusting the creative process, starting with research, various brainstorming techniques, through sketches to design evolution on the computer is central to all studio design classes.
